I am a Mormon. I have been for most my life and have served as a missionary as well as an Elder in the Melchizedek priesthood. I would say that I know what I am talking about when I answer the following common questions. Please, if anyone wishes to know something not talked about here, please post a reply and I will eagerly answer to the best of my ability.
Q. Oh, Russ, you are LDS.... How many wives do you have?
A. One.... we only marry one wife. And, we are more likely than any other religion to remain married to that special lady.
As for the Polygamists in AZ and UT... They are not Mormons by our definition. They actually are more like Pentecostals that read the Book of Mormon.
To have more than one wife in our faith is forbidden and brings excommunication. That said, yes we did practice polygamy in the mid 1800's. The one fact no one else seems to want to point out about that is that it was not only legal and practiced throughout the bible, it was practiced by many from all faiths until made illegal in the 1890's. At that time, we stopped the practice since its purpose in preservation of our faith while those of other faiths hunted us like animals was served.
Q. Hey, what about drinking? Why don't you guys drink alcohol or coffee?
A. Do you really have to ask? We don't do illegal drugs, either. Everything can be done in moderation without harm. But, in this day and age, who really does anything in moderation? We stay far from such things because even moderately intoxicated, it is a barrier between us and our families as well as our God. Coffee and tea literally tan the body from the inside out as well as cause havoc with metabolic systems. Smoking requires no answer.
Q. Ok, but I heard you weren't Christians.
A. I heard that too. Then I opened my Bible and guess what? It talks about Christ. I opened my Book of Mormon and guess what? It talks about Christ. I opened my Doctrine and Covenants, again, it talks about Christ. Then I opened my Hymn book..... We sing hymns about.... CHRIST. In fact, we are called the Church of Jesus Christ (as was the original church that we claim to be) Of Latter Day Saints (Meaning the original church restored through a prophet.)
This irritates me. We believe all followers of Christ carry truth and potential. But, you want to find out how ignorant someone is, wait for them to say the CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST are not Christians.
Q. I'd like to talk to those nice young men I see doing missionary work but don't want them to force me to join.
A. TALK TO THEM. They are taught to be respectful and that if are to receive the gospel and join, it will be on your terms and only when the time is right. They will teach you something simple that is so missing in the world today. You are a son or daughter of God and therefore, worth respect from yourself and others.
Q. OK, what about those temples.... what goes on there?
A. That is something really special. We believe that all who have lived are deserving of a chance to receive the gospel and all the opportunities in Our fathers kingdom. The Zulu warrior that lived over a hundred years ago and never saw anyone outside their world let alone hear that Christ lived is just as much a child of God and just a valued as we are. The work done in the temple is for the dead to allow them the same opportunity and baptism.
Q. Well, what about black people? Do they have the priesthood? I heard they didn't for a long time. that's just wrong!
A. Our brothers and sisters of color are just that, our brothers and sisters. One of the first men Joseph Smith ordained to the Melchizedek priesthood was a freed slave. Something happened several years later where the saints asked Brigham Young when they arrived in Utah whether the slaves they brought should have the priesthood. He brought the matter to God but received no answer, much like the way a father allows a child to work a question out when they should really know the answer in the first place. That period of silence lasted for over one hundred years until in 1977, God felt the saints were ready for the answer. That answer was.. "DUH! What did you think I was doing when I told Joseph to ordain his friend!"
The worthy men of all races who waited were always entitled to the priesthood. It is a shameful lesson we live with just as throughout time, God has had to let his children work out the obvious. For this reason, also, we came to respect and love our members of color on a level not shared with any other faith. We had to work for it. It took one hundred years of all saints crying out to show our love for each other and convince our Heavenly father we were ready after asking such a dumb question. The test was not whether they were worthy. Mormons quickly abolished slavery among our brethren and were always at the front for recognition of equal rights. The test was whether those who asked this question were worthy of our black brethren. We are a diverse people who love and cherish each other as a family. But, I can say that I look upon my brothers and sisters with different skin hues with a bit more appreciation because I know that they followed the prophet even when they may not have felt as appreciated. In the end, though, considering the deep persecution of the saints in the 1800's, this may have spared the many lives of those who also had to deal with racial persecution. A Mormon Elder who was black would almost certainly been a target for the haters. That may just be my own speculation. But, I am grateful for these brethren who's deep faith and stories inspire my own progress.
Q. What about "alternative" lifestyles?
A. There are no children of our Heavenly Father who he does not love and cherish as much as any other. Sex outside marriage is wrong. No room for argument on that. Marriage is man to woman. That said, loving someone is nit a sin and never has been. But, acting upon that love in certain ways is most defiantly sinful and wrong. Just as if you love your friends wife, you keep it to yourself because she is married and it hurts a family to share that. Otherwise, isn't it great that someone so wonderful can exist that can be so loved? The same for gays. It is great to love someone. But, the sin happens when the act outside marriage happens. And, marriage is man and woman. That is not going to change. The natural order of all things surrounds the family. Man-woman-child-cute kitten and/or dog. There is an important place for all Gods children and those of alternate needs are blessed when they put their own needs aside to serve God.
OK, I hope I have answered some questions for some. I know that our Lord lives and am grateful to share these things with you. I know the Church of Jesus Christ LDS to be the true church of God and invite more questions. I Share these things in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen.
